The Right Move: CNN and NBC Scrap Plans for Hillary Films

The Washington Post reported that both CNN and NBC have cancelled plans to produce films about the life of Hillary Clinton. Charles Ferguson, the CNN film’s director, complained that he was frozen out and neither Democrat nor Republican nor anyone in the Clinton camp would offer him access or help, yet despite his frustration, scrapping these films is the correct decision.
It is the right of each candidate to define themselves to the American people and it is up to us to do our due diligence on the issues and engage with that candidate.  It is also the job of the mainstream media to cover all candidates fairly and share valuable news about issues and policy prescriptions — not fluff.
The last thing we need are networks using the name of someone as iconic as Hillary Clinton in order to sensationalize her further, using her name to sell copy and boost their sagging ratings.  While no one can know what kind of a portrayal either film would offer, given that past is prologue, the biased, spiteful nonsense we witnessed when she last ran is not something that needs repeating.  And on the very off chance that these films would have been glowing portrayals, that would likewise be exerting unfair influence.
I’m sure Secretary Clinton is capable of speaking for herself.
All anyone was asking for last time, and all we are asking for any time, is objective and even coverage. And that applies to any candidate, male or female.
It is high time that the American people have an opportunity to vote on substance and make choices without undue influence.  The media doesn’t need to pick our presidents for us.  They’ve been doing it long enough.
